There’s just 36 days until the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games commence but today marks the start of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The Cultural Olympiad began in 2008 and has been spread over four years to inspire creativity across all forms of culture and give everyone in the UK a chance to be part of London 2012.

So far, 16 million people have taken part in or attended performances, over 169,000 have attended more than 8,300 workshops, more than 3.7 million took part in nearly 3,700 Open Weekend events and 2,500 cultural projects have been awarded the London 2012 Inspire mark.

Today, a wave of cultural events has started, centred in London but rippling out across Britain, with 12,000 performances and events including 137 world premieres, and more than 25,000 artists appearing in 900 venues in 204 centres.

The Cultural Olympiad demonstrates that the Olympics is about far more than just sport – it’s about the volunteers, the torch relay, the street parties and the hundreds of Olympic inspired arts and culture events taking place across the country.
